The Coyote Willow School House is an open doorway for those interested in courting willow and acquiring the skills, resources, and inspiration to make baskets ...and keep making baskets! We want to share our devotion to willow as well answer the call of so many near and far who wish to learn! Learning willow basket weaving takes some time, as all relationships do, and we encourage forming a relationship with the willows themselves as a starting point on the journey to making baskets.
Willow basket making is a folk craft that has the potential to stitch our hands and our bodies into intimate relationships with the living world, guided by the seasons and the longing that lives in all of us to create. Baskets are an incredible vessel of culture, spanning time and space. In some form or another weaving lives within all of our bloodlines. Baskets are of the body and our bodies are of the earth. We believe that forming relationships with plants and eco-systems, and creating with our hands is a response to the inert and extractive Industries that surround us at this time.
While online learning cannot replace the richness and depth of learning in person, this is still a great way for folks to learn! Our vision is to make weaving more approachable and accessible.
We hope that by offering pre-recorded classes we can provide an opportunity for folks to reference the teachings in order to solidify the learning; something that is not possible within the time constraints of in person workshops.
Ultimately the Coyote Willow School House is a companion to a basket weaving practice and in time our goal is to grow into a community of basket makers offering a wide variety of basketry classes.
