Courting Willow

Willow keeps the time. Mainly video-based, the Courting Willow course will walk you through the process of gathering, planting, tending, harvesting, sorting, curing, soaking, and mellowing willow for your baskets. We will offer up some resources towards sourcing willow that others grow, gathering wild willow, and cultivating personal and community-tended willow patches in a way that suits your home/ecology.

Your baskets begin in the dreaming roots of winter.

We are excited to bring you this offering in the season of the harvest so that you might head out into the landscape or towards your local weavers to gather up even just one baskets worth of willow this season to prepare for our basket course.

We are offering  COURTING WILLOW as a place to start, growing your relationship with willow, so that your baskets might carry within them that foundational and strengthening bond with the living world. This not only brings autonomy into your weaving practice, but also weaves you into relationship with so may other weavers and the more than human world season after season. In the course, we bring you to tended willow patches, wild and cultivated, and walk you through approaching, planting, harvesting, sorting, tending, curing, and soaking your willow and offer up bits of other teachings to drink in.

The course will include:

  • 5 video-based lessons on harvesting and tending wild and cultivated willow, planting and growing cultivated willow, sorting and curing willow, and soaking and mellowing willow to prepare for basket making.

  • Access to the Coyote Willow School House community 'THE RIVER & THE ROWBOAT'. This is a place where folks can have an ongoing space to share about your basket making process and growing relationship with willow, share finished or in process weaving work, and ask questions about the course content and receive answers from us and other school house community members. This will be an aspect of the school that will continue to grow in time along with our course offerings.

  • A full resource section of the course with written documents providing resources related to the Courting Willow content. Including information on willow species, accessing willow basketry cuttings and cured willow, reading lists related to willow and basketry, and more.
